As a team we can confidently say that this design project is one of our favourites to date. Our clients had an eye for detail, favouring natural textures and materials for their aesthetic which suited Julie's vision down to the ground (pardon the pun!). Even though the design was completed early Autumn 2022, we continually visit this garden all year round to develop and nurture the plant life in it, tending to them throughout winter and looking after them during the hot summer months.
To begin with, it was important to look at the scale of this large garden and realise how much potential it had. Julie could create a space that took away the rectangular 'plot-like' appearance and instead provide a garden with soft curves, areas for our clients & their family to enjoy and introduce different heights in the garden to add interest.
To be given the go ahead for the project, we started with a design consultation to share objectives and goals. Following on, visual plans were drawn up. It was a great opportunity for client and Border Control to collaborate, putting together what our client wanted with Julie's design expertise and flair. We ended up with a design in 2D and 3D to ensure our client could visualise every part of their future garden. Our plans incorporated both hard landscaping and soft landscaping elements. This enabled us to show the bones of the garden as well as the touches of greenery that would arrive after. Julie's drawn up plans were paired with carefully curated mood boards full of ideas that we wanted to bring into the garden. Samples of materials followed soon after, to allow our clients to choose exactly what they wanted, from cobbles to gravel, millboard to Corten steel.
As Border Control is a soft landscaping team, we worked with B Cooper Groundworks for the hard landscaping stage. Bruce and his team have been brilliant with every project we've worked on with them. As they finished building each bed, corner or feature, Border Control worked around them to fill in the newly finished areas with plants, taking weeks off the project time compared to one team that worked on the hard and soft landscaping consecutively.

Right: a snapshot of our 3D walkthrough of the garden.
Natural stone edging with soft rounded corners. Family friendly without compromising on aesthetic. This stone edging has a hand carved underside ridge running along the length to make space for outdoor strip lighting. This little detail turns the garden into a beautiful space at night, not just a pretty picture in the day!
Our rust coloured moon gate is made from Corten steel. It's a beautiful structure without taking away from the rest of the project. Again, it's the little details that make this design, with matching steel used as edging around the garden for cohesion and flow, as well as the central sculpture.
We showed our clients this sculpture for inspiration, they loved it so much it was purchased and made the main focal point of the garden!
The design allowed for several large soft landscaping areas: two huge raised borders, wildflower lawn, mediterranean gravel bed, barked area for ornamental shrubs, rose garden and more. Julie designs each area with the sun in mind, making sure every plant is in a suitable position with accompanying matching plants so the border works as a whole.
We couldn't have completed this design project without our Border Control team who worked so hard on this for months. A big thank you to them! Also a huge thank you to our client who trusted us with our vision and allowed us bring it to life in front of their eyes, and of course for the home baking & cups of tea!
